Mathamtical Formula to Determine Favorite Bands

Okay, So like I mentioned earlier, I had a readon for ranking all these songs. I needed to know for certain what songs were 5 stars, 4 stars, 3, 2, and 1. Now that I know, I am applying these knew ratings to make a new list. I have ranked all my favorite bands using the star system. A 5 star song is worth 5 points, a 4 is worth 4, a 3 3, a 2 2. And a 1 star song is worth absolutely nothing. I chose to give songs 1-35 5 stars, 36-125 4stars, 126-275 3 stars, and 276-525 2stars. Then the remaining 600-700 songs are all given one star. So anyway, here are the top 50 bands, along with there scores, as established by this ranking system:

1. Modest Mouse, 74
2. Warren Zevon, 71
3. Beck, 55
4. Bruce Springsteen, 44
5. The Violent Fems, 42
6. John Prine, 39
7. The Offspring, 34
8. The Beatles, 30
9. Johnny Cash, 27
10. Nirvana, 25
11. Rancid, 24
12. Rage Against the Machine, 24
13. The Ramones, 22
14. The Rolling Stones, 22
15. Cake, 21
16. The Bouncing Souls, 20
17. Beastie Boys, 19
18. Green Day, 18
19. The Dead Kennedys, 17
20. Velvet Underground, 17
21. The Magnetic Fields, 17
22. Husker Du, 16
23. Queen, 16
24. Dynamite Hack, 14
25. The Misfits, 13
26. Man... or Astroman?, 13
27. The White Stripes, 13
28. Camper Van Beethoven, 12
29. The Clash, 11
30. Andrew WK, 11
31. Steve Earle, 11
32. Billy Joel, 10
33. Jump Little Children, 10
34. Sweet, 10
35. They Might Be Giants, 9
36. The Buzzcocks, 9
37. Generation X, 9
38. The Who, 9
39. Stiff Little Fingers, 8
40. Eminem, 8
41. The Strokes, 8
42. The Damhned, 8
43. Billy Bragg, 7
44. Joe jackson, 7
45. Tenacious D, 7
46. Kid Rock, 7
47. Limp Bizkit, 7
48. Blink 182, 7
49. The Zambonis, 6
50. Guster, 6

This is a very interesting list for me, because it is much different than the list I would have gottne useing the regular method.

I think there are two flaws that may account for the different results than you would have guessed in your musician list.

1) You fail to differentiate the five star songs from one another. Shouldn't Beck get some sort of bonus for having your number one song of all time? Same with the four star, and when you get into the three star songs especially, there's such a wide range of songs that it might be worthwhile to change from a starred system to a ten point decimal system. Say, Beck "Loser" gets a 10.0, while the lower rated 5 star songs get a 9.0, and then add those up? This, I think, becomes much more important with the three star section. I just think there's something wrong with giving the same score to number one and number 35.

2) This does't take into account albums, and while you may be more of a song person, albums probably have an effect. For instance, Beck's "Odelay" was basicly the soundtrack to my life from eighth through tenth grade. This would have to be factored into my list.

PS. I know you have time to figure this into your list, don't act like you schedule's booked...

Actually I considered revising the system and taking into account my favorite 500 songs. My favorite song would recieve 500 points, second favorite would recieve 499 points, 300th favorite would recieve 200 points, etc. What do you think of that idea?

It would be interesting to see the results. I never took statistics, but I think the key is to find the right statistical weight to a song being number 1 as opposed to 2. I've been working on archiving and organizing my music, so I hope to have a good list of songs so as to make a similarly mathematically based list. I'm curious if I really like Beck as much as I think I do...also, do I dislike Justin Timberlake as much as I think I do?

I know the new number list idea isn't perfect, but I would like to see how it compares to this list. Oh and let me assure you that you don't dislike Justin Timberlake nearly as much as you think you do... nobody does.
